Clearer water benefits seagrasses, which require light to photosynthesize and provide additional habitat and carbon storage. By removing excess nutrients—often from agricultural runoff or wastewater—oyster reefs also help reduce harmful algal blooms that can deplete oxygen and create “dead zones.”
