USS Spiegel Grove: A Sunken Treasure and the Goliath Grouper’s Struggle for Survival

The USS Spiegel Grove, a retired Navy ship, was intentionally sunk in 2002 off the Florida Keys to form an artificial reef. Today, it’s one of the most famous dive sites in the area, attracting marine life—including the Atlantic goliath grouper. These massive fish can grow up to 8 feet long and weigh 800 pounds. Once critically endangered due to overfishing, goliath groupers have made a comeback, but they remain vulnerable. Their populations are at risk from habitat destruction, high mercury levels, and a controversial new law allowing limited recreational fishing. Despite the threats, these giants continue to gather at artificial reefs like the Spiegel Grove, where divers can witness their impressive presence up close.
